A new study from Taiwan suggests that even minor injuries in traffic accidents can increase the risk of birth complications for pregnant women. The research, published in the journal Injury Prevention, reveals that pregnant women involved in traffic collisions have a higher likelihood of experiencing serious complications during childbirth, such as placental dislodgement, heavy bleeding, and the need for a cesarean section. The study analyzed data from births, insurance claims, and deaths in Taiwan between 2007 and 2016, finding that nearly 20,900 births occurred among approximately 20,740 women involved in traffic accidents during that period. The researchers compared these women with a control group of pregnant women who had not been involved in crashes. The findings showed that women involved in crashes, even with minor injuries, were more likely to experience prolonged contractions, placental abruption, heavy bleeding, and the need for a C-section. The risks were even higher for women with more severe injuries.
